I Think We Should Just Be friends

It’s been a couple of days now and it feels like I have been punched in the sternum. A couple of days since I heard one of the most devastating seven-word sentences in the English language. Well, there are worse ones: “I’m sorry, but she died last night”; “I’m sorry, you will never walk again”. But right now, this is the worst one:
“I think we should just be friends.”
It’s not heartbreak, I think. You have to be in love to have heartbreak. It has to be a boyfriend or girlfriend or wife or partner walking out on you for it to be heartbreak, the type where it feels like your insides have been put through a blender. And you weren’t actually going out with them, were you? Just dating them. Though it had been a couple of months, and you were kind of hoping that they’d look up and actually ask you to make it official, but instead the opposite had happened. That’s what you get for being optimistic, you think.
So, you wonder if you’re even entitled to feeling upset. Probably not, but you can’t feel guilty for having emotions. This must be something else if it’s not heartbreak. Heart-scraped knees. Heartbruise. You can forgive those Greek philosophers who used to think the heart was the seat of all emotions: it’s not your brain that hurts. It’s your chest. You can feel your pulse fluttering against your spine, and there’s a sense of a heavy weight crushing your lungs. You are sighing a lot. You put in your headphones and try to shut out the world for a few minutes, but every song seems to be about love or heartbreak and you give up and go back to lying perfectly still.
Time goes on, in that annoying way time does. Even when it feels like the world has ended, time will carry on in its usual no-nonsense linear fashion. You know you should eat but you feel too full.
“TOO FULL OF SADNESS”, you announce to your friends via text, playing up the melodramatic aspect because it’s easier if you make it funny, put on a mask, act like it’s not bothering you. And it shouldn’t, should it? It’s not your fault. It’s nobody’s fault. It’s just a thing that happened. They text back, full of “:(“s and “<3″s and “thinking of you”s, and you know they’re counting themselves lucky it’s not their budding relationships. It’s not their sweethearts changing their minds.
Just friends.
Like they actually want to be your friend. They were just being nice. They never want to see you again. They got sick of you. You can’t really blame them: you get sick of yourself sometimes.
Eventually you get up. You stare at the shower for a while, and then decide it’s not worth it.  You start feeling irritated over little things, the amount of time and effort you put into preparing for your last date, and all the dates before that. You try and pinpoint the exact moment they decided against dating you: did they feel like this last week? Is the last kiss you have with them really going to be that awkward hurried peck in your car? That’s very disappointing. A small part of you feels like that’ll be the last kiss you’ll ever again, and that you should start crafting a FOREVER ALONE banner to put at the bottom of all your emails.
So what have you done since then? You debate sending them a sad text, and decide against it. You end up sitting in the kitchen in the dark with a glass of wine, because it’s not the brewing alcoholism your mother warns you against if you have one glass of wine when you’re feeling upset, is it?
You send the text and regret it immediately, but you sigh and shrug. It’s not like you have anything to lose any more, is it?
You wonder if emotions are liquids. When you stand up, all the hurt seems to pool in the same place in an acute ball of unhappiness. But it doesn’t seem so bad lying down, like everything’s spread out across your whole body.
You go back to bed and fall asleep with the light on because you don’t feel like turning it off.
It’s not a good night. Consciousness keeps creeping back, unbidden, even though you try and shut it down. You turn over and feel so, so tired, but not sleepy. After half past five, sleep doesn’t come again. You stare at the curtains and watch them lightening by degrees. The world outside is waking up. It’s a brand new day and the sun is shining so brightly you know it will hurt your eyes.
You probe your chest out of curiosity, the way you do when you have a new injury you’re trying to work out. This is the beginning, a dark red mark on your skin only you can see. You know it will go through a muted rainbow, blue and purple and green, and then an angry brown, and then yellow. And then one day you’ll feel for your yellow bruise and it’ll be gone. It will happen: it just takes time.

Airport Expansion: Protest Disrupts Flights

More than 20 flights were canceled on Monday at Heathrow Airport here in London after members of an environmental group cut through a perimeter fence and chained themselves to one another on a runway to protest against the possible expansion of the airport.
At a time of heightened vigilance in Britain, the security breach fanned concerns about security at Europe’s busiest airport after the activists gained access to the northern runway.
About a dozen protesters from the group Plane Stupid managed to cut through the wire fence and enter the runway at 3:30 a.m. to demonstrate against a politically divisive proposal over a third runway at Heathrow.
The police said six protesters had been arrested. Twenty-two flights were canceled as a result of the disruption, the airport said, although other flights on the northern runway continued to take off during the protest.

Another Bomb Blast In Maiduguri

A huge explosion that echoed all over Maiduguri town has just happened near the city’s main market, a place where two suicide bombers killed dozens of people last Saturday,  March 7th.
According to the Premium Times, a witness near the location of explosion said that the incident occurred along the popular Ahmadu Bello way which leads to the Monday market Maiduguri.
The explosion just happened now along the Ahmadu Bello way. We don’t know if it is a suicide bombing. People are running away from the market area as I speak to you now,” said Abba Shehu, a security operative.

Security forces in Nigeria say at least 5 people have been killed in a market in Maiduguri.

Robbery At The Lagos Assembly.

According to new reports, lawmakers at the Lagos State House of Assembly last week quietly initiated moves to amend a bill seeking to pay the Speaker and Deputy Speaker life pensions and other lavish post-retirement benefits when they leave office in May.
Naij.com investigative journalist and contributor, Chidi Okoye, writes from Lagos.
The House is dominated by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party that is vigorously pursuing the pruning of the cost of government if it wins presidential election in a few weeks’ time. The irony would have been funny if not that this writer is a tax payer in Lagos State.
To be fair to the lawmakers, they are only trying to grab their share of a controversial law that was pushed through by former Governor Bola Tinubu, who used it to secure an enviable retirement welfare package. National lawmakers also recently amended the constitution to allow the four leaders of both the Senate and House of Representatives enjoy life pensions and other lavish retirement packages.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has always boasted of carrying the public along in its legislative functions, via the numerous public hearings it holds when certain laws are being considered. We would therefore hope that they invite taxpayers to debate this bill. The fact that this development was not even reported in all major national newspapers is disheartening; but not unexpected as it is an open secret that journalists covering the House are usually bribed to kill certain stories.
The story has of course been denied by the House leadership; with a vague explanation given that the amendment to the constitution by the National Assembly, which has been forwarded to all 3 state Houses of Assembly, supported the idea. Whether the Lagos Assembly is amending its own law, or that forwarded by the National Assembly, the fact remains that this issue is being deliberated upon.
This is one law that should not be passed quietly. It is time for civil society groups to lead the charge for scrutiny into these attempts to continue paying public office holders lavish salaries for life even after leaving office. At a time of dwindling crude oil sales and a weakened currency, we should be debating cuts in salaries of public office holders and not lavish post-retirement benefits.
The media should focus its searchlight on the Lagos State House of Assembly in the coming months as it walks this bill through the various steps necessary for it to become law. Activists, especially those on Nigeria’s vibrant social media platforms, should not ignore this. Labour unions need to respond by either asking for similar packages for civil servants or protest against this. The APC, through its presidential and governorship candidates, should react to this and let us know if this is part of the party’s manifesto.

White House Security Alert

A Secret Service dog had a possible hit on something suspicious regarding a vehicle several blocks from the White House, Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said Saturday.
The first family was scheduled to depart for Selma, Alabama, earlier in the day.
They arrived at Joint Base Andrews by motorcade about an hour later than scheduled. The President usually travels by helicopter from the White House to Joint Base Andrews.
Reporters who were gathered to cover the President's departure to Joint Base Andrews were kept inside the White House press room as a security precaution, Leary said.
The suspicious vehicle was identified on the 1600 block of Constitution Avenue.

Card Reader Trial gets Pass Mark Delta

Potential voters in the forthcoming general elections, who turned up for the card reader trial at the Umuezei Ward in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State on Saturday expressed their delight at the efficiency of the device deployed in the polling units.
The Independent National Electoral Commission and voters alike reported to the 14 voting units promptly at the 8am scheduled beginning of the exercise and went into business soon afterwards.
The units were located at Asagba Primary School and Niger Mixed Secondary School, all in Asaba. Six of the units were located at Niger Mixed Secondary School while the rest were at Asagba Primary School.
The ward has a total voting population of 13,905. But only 10,865 voters had collected their PVC, according to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Anidi Ikowak.
Most of the verification went on smoothly, taking just a few seconds for the polling officials to interview and test each voter with the card reader.
But there were a few cases where the process caused anxious moments as it took several trials before the card reader could verify the few voters.
One of such incidents occurred at Polling Unit 12, where an elderly woman, Mrs. Franca Oba, waited for almost 30 minutes before her fingerprint was accepted by the card reader.
Unlike other voters that just came and had their fingerprints verified within a few seconds, Oba had to avail all her 10 fingers for verification for seven times before the reader verified hers.
In her reaction, Oba said, “The card reader is good. But if every voter has to go through this, then it means people will not leave the polling unit before midnight.”
There was an overwhelming presence of policemen, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr. Zaki Ahmed.
The INEC team to the area was led by a National Commissioner, Dr. Ishmael Igbani.
The team also had the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, Mr. Mike Igini, and the Delta REC, Mr. Anidi Ikowak.

Police Rescue Kidnapped American Missionary

Rev. Phyllis Sortor, the kidnapped American woman Missionary, has been rescued following by a combined effort by a team of police, military and SSS.
According to Leadership newspaper, Sortor, 87, was rescued at about 8:30 pm on Friday at a spot between Ero and Emi woro communities and was immediately taken to the state police headquarters in Lokoja.
A source within the police said that the American cleric was sighted by a lady who immediately raised an alarm which attracted other people around. Police later came to escort the woman.
All efforts to speak or take the photograph of the woman by journalists were frustrated by American embassy officials who insisted on going with her to Abuja. Sortor was reported to appear hale, hearty and in good condition.

PDP | APC Paid N5000 Each for Lagos Walk

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party says every person that attended the one-million-man march of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos received at least N5,000 each.
The party in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, said groups that attended the march received between N1m and N10m.
The PDP said the APC was deceiving Lagosians by tagging the march as “one-million-march” because the Teslim Balogun Stadium where the walk ended, could only accommodate 24,000 people.
The PDP said during the rally, posters and billboards of its candidates were vandalised while two people in private vehicles were attacked for carrying the sticker of the PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje.
The statement read, “The PDP has described as blatant falsehood and over exaggeration of the number of attendees which the APC continues to put at one Million probably to give General Muhammadu Buhari false hope in Lagos State.
“The capacity of the stadium used is 24,325 and could not have accommodated over 100,000 without stampede! The Party notes that the APC was over ambitious to expect one million lovers of the APC in Lagos State at this period that the masses are disenchanted with its policies; a reason why Governor Babatunde Fashola could not attend the rally.
“The PDP posits that the realistic figure of about 11,000 APC members actually participated due to coercion or monetary inducement.
“The PDP further wants the security agencies to investigate the anomalies observed at the rally which include: Assault of persons; destruction of PDP campaign materials; use of abusive, threat, provocative speeches and songs.
“We condemn the actions of some overzealous members of the APC who participated in the Buhari/Osibajo rally but actually deployed to unleash on the banners and other campaign materials of PDP on the rally routes.
“Lagosians in two private cars and a commercial bus were harassed and the vehicles maliciously damaged because they had the stickers of the PDP and Agbaje. We blame the APC for not curtailing the excesses of such members in order to prevent such assaults.
“The number of persons at the rally can at best be near 11,000. This is in spite our intelligence report that individual participants were mobilised with N5,000 while the groups got between N1m and N10M each.”

Moroccan King Snubs GEJ Phone Call Over Election Issues

Premium Times reports that the Moroccan monarch, King Mohammed VI, has rejected a request from President Goodluck Jonathan for a telephone conversation, saying it was an “inappropriate” move by the the President to seek electoral favour just weeks before the Presidential poll.

Mohammed VI snubbed Mr. Jonathan’s request last week, saying it was more of an attempt to seek electoral favour than a genuine diplomatic act, the country’s foreign ministry said Friday.
“The request by Nigerian authorities for a phone conversation between HM King Mohammed VI and Nigerian President was refused by the Monarch who deemed it inappropriate on grounds of the upcoming elections in Nigeria,” the Moroccan Foreign Affairs ministry said in a statement.
The statement explained that the monarch rejected the request for a phone chat and the sending of a Nigerian envoy to the country because Mohammed VI viewed the overture as an attempt by Mr. Jonathan to take advantage of Morocco’s influence to secure Muslim votes in the forthcoming election.

Namadi Sambo | A 73 Year Old Man Can Not Rule Nigeria.

He asked Nigerians not to vote  Buhari, in the March 28 election, saying the country does not deserve a leader who is 73. He said this during the solidarity rally by Nigerian sportsmen and women for President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja Saturday morning, Premium Times reports.
Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, which makes him 72, and  73 in December 2015.
But Mr. Sambo, 60, believes the former head of state is too old to be President, a sentiment he first expressed in January when he suggested Mr. Buhari is too old and weak to physically lead the war against terrorist group, Boko Haram.
“Our President is a young President. And I don’t think this country deserves a 73-year old President.” Sambo said.
He therefore asked the sportsmen and women to allow Mr. Jonathan to “carry go” in the March 28 presidential election.
“Come 28 March, make sure you have your PVC cards …and make sure Mr. President carry go,” he said.

Suicide Bomber Strikes In Maiduguri Market Kills 10

At least 10 people are feared killed in a bomb explosion from a suicide bomber riding in a Keke Napep in Maiduguri.
The explosion, which occurred at a crowded commercial area in Maiduguri, went off at around 11am on Saturday morning.
Witnesses said many people were affected. Residents said the suicide bomber tried to enter Baga fish market motor park.
A top security officer, who requested not to be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed to Premium Times the number of people killed.
“About ten persons were confirmed killed so far but the blast was massive”, said the security officer. “We are still taking count of casualties.”
It will be recalled that the military warned that Boko Haram insurgents are set to carry out more suicide bombing attacks in their bid to regain territories the military have taken from them.

I wasn’t Trying to Seduce The President –Seyi Shay

Most entertainers have been having fun with President Goodluck Jonathan in recent times and earlier in the week, the President was in Lagos and hanged out with some of these celebrities.
Singer, Seyi Shay was among the entertainers and the pretty diva ‘broke’ the internet with the dress she wore to meet the president at the event.
The picture where the singer, wearing an incredibly short dress, while sitting beside the president, went viral and so many fans and foes have expressed their feelings concerning Seyi’s outfit.
Many people, including celebrities and notable figures such as comedian Wale Gates; social analyst, Omojuwa, took to their social media accounts to express their feelings over her choice of outfit.
However, when Saturday Beats contacted the singer, she explained that she had two outfits for the event and the outfit that caused the stir was what she wore to perform.
She emphasised that she is a respectable lady and was not planning to seduce the president in any way.
“I am a very respectable young lady and I was not in any way trying to seduce the President with the outfit I wore. I had two outfits for the event, one was for my performance and the other was worn after I performed. The dress I was pictured in with the President was what I wore during my performance.
“I came on stage and greeted everyone according to their culture and I did the same for Mr. President. He was impressed and he asked where and how I knew how to greet in his native dialect and I said I learnt it. That was what brought about the giggling and smiles in the picture. I’m a performer and what I do on stage doesn’t reflect my everyday life. I had two outfits on that day and it was a youth event. Who wouldn’t feel overwhelmed meeting the President? Well, I did and I felt honoured because it is not every day you get to meet the president of your country,” she said.
Seyi said her fans should expect her much anticipated album at the last quarter of the year.
“I am busy working on my album and it would be out by the last quarter of the year. I promise not to disappoint my fans. I would deliver because I love you all,” she said.

Chibok Girls Are Alive, Will Be Recovered | GEJ

Almost one year after over 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, and possibly encouraged by the inroads the Nigerian military has made in recovering some territories from Boko Haram, President Goodluck Jonathan has again promised that his government is not relenting in its efforts to rescue them and reunite them with their families.
The president, who spoke when he appeared on the African Independent Television (AIT) programme Kaakaki, expressed optimism that as the military continues to narrow the area of territory held by Boko Haram in the North-east, the kidnapped girls were still alive and would be recovered.
He premised his confidence on the fact that the girls were still alive, stating that had they been killed by the terror group, their corpses would have been displayed for the whole world to see and to instill fear.
“Some territories are still in the hands of Boko Haram. But we promised
that we must get the girls. The good story is that they have not killed them because the terrorists, when they kill, they display.
“They use it to intimidate the whole society. The girls are alive. We will get the girls. Luckily, we are narrowing down the area of their control. So we will get them,” he said.
Jonathan, in the hour-long programme, also admitted that his government underestimated the Islamist sect, but with the increased capacity of the military, which had taken possession of more than 65 per cent of the military hardware required to rout the group, he stated that the remaining territories still under the control of the terrorists would soon be recaptured.
“At the beginning, probably we did not really estimate the capacity of Boko Haram. It is obvious. Boko Haram started as a non-violent group led by (Mohammed) Yusuf, limited to around Maiduguri area and parts of Yobe. They had not even spread to Adamawa.
“Just like every group of youths or young people who are criminally inclined, over the period they expanded their network and linked up with other terrorist organisations like Al-Qaeda and other similar brands in the world.
“So they continued to build their capacity and it got to a point that for you to tackle them in the kind of environment they operate, you need some specialised equipment and we don’t manufacture these equipment. That is why the strategy changed. So it was not deliberate,” he said.
On the forthcoming elections, Jonathan acknowledged that he is facing a stiffer opposition than he faced in 2011, but remained confident that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would win at the polls.
He said: “I agree with you it was easier in 2011, but PDP is still the dominant party. There is no polling unit in Nigeria where you don’t have members of the PDP.
“Yes, for one reason or the other, within the party people get angry and may even vote against PDP but in terms of membership of the PDP, there is no party that has that spread.
“So PDP still has the most formidable structure, PDP has better chances of winning a national election.
“Even the opposition will tell you if they are realistic. Who has strengthened the opposition? Are they not the PDP elements? If you remove the PDP elements from the opposition, they will just crumble like a pack of cards.
“Why are people aggressive towards the PDP to the extent that even the presidential convoy is stoned? Why do you show that aggression? If you are comfortable, you will not do that.”
He however admitted that re-election bids in most countries are more challenging, stating: “Globally, it is more challenging for a president to secure a second term than the first term, because people get disappointed when their expectations are not quickly met by those they voted for.
But PDP still has an edge over the opposition.”
Also commenting on the fuel shortages in the country, the president blamed the situation on lack of refining capacity in the country, adding that the federal government had taken the necessary measure to end the fuel queues.
“Of course, the issue of payment is being addressed and we believe that within one or two day, this will completely go. But until we start refining our crude oil to get our own products here within the country, we cannot get out of some of these problems.
"It is even really the policy of government. When you continue to export raw materials, you are actually exporting jobs. But our objective is to privatise the refineries and attract private sector investors into the sector,” he said.
On a similar note, the federal government yesterday held a closed-door meeting with the parents and relatives of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls and laid out plans on their release.
A press statement by Olawale Rasheed, Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Power, said that during the meeting held in Maiduguri, the
Borno State capital, the federal government through the minister (Mohammed Wakil) told the parents how far it had gone in securing the release of the schoolgirls from captivity, adding that the government was still committed to their safe return.
He told the parents that the federal government has devised a comprehensive counter-insurgency strategy which has four focal goals of reclaiming occupied territories; rescuing abducted persons; resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs); and the rehabilitation of insurgency-ravaged communities.
Wakil told the gathering: “Mr. President is pursuing a multi-faceted strategy which address the pains, anger and frustrations of victims. Our president directed me to tell you that his government is committed to doing everything possible for the safe return of your daughters.
“I am here to convey the symphathy of Mr. President and the entire federal cabinet to you the parents and families as well as all other victims. As you are all aware, our military is gaining the upper hand in this sacred war. We believe by the grace of God, your children will return safely.”
He praised the families for refusing to support the politicisation of the abduction of the schoolgirls, stating: “Your presence here to listen to the message of Mr. President confirms your belief in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations as a solution to our collective challenge.
“I assure you that not only will the rescue operations be successful, the other three goals of reclaiming occupied territories, resettlement of IDPs and rebuilding of communities will be pursued to a logical conclusion.
“This is a personal pledge of Mr. President which the entire administration is committed to.”
Responding, the spokesperson of the parents and families of the Chibok girls, Mrs. Pindar Dauda, thanked the president for his concern and sympathy while praying for the success of the ongoing military operations.
She however appealed to the president not to relent, insisting: “He should continue with the war against Boko Haram. He should get our children back to us safely. We are praying for him and the military.”
In attendance at the meeting were the youth leader of the Chibok community and some elders of the community.
Meanwhile, Boko Haram militants have been amassing weapons in the Borno town of Gwoza, believed to be the group’s headquarters, killing residents who were unable to flee, a senator and witnesses said yesterday.
A female resident, who fled Gwoza on Tuesday and requested anonymity said the insurgents rounded up elderly men who were studying the Qur'an outside the home of a local cleric.
The men were later executed in front of their wives, the witness told AFP from Yola, capital of neighbouring Adamawa State.
“The Boko Haram men brought out brand new guns from cartons, tested
them and shot dead all the men who they forced to lie face down,” she said.
Some of these details were supported by Senator Ali Ndume, who also confirmed the large build-up of insurgents in Gwoza.
“Boko Haram insurgents have in recent days been converging on Gwoza where they killed many male residents and chased women and children out of the town,” said Ndume.
The group’s leader Abubakar Shekau proclaimed Gwoza part of the Islamic caliphate and reclaiming the town that was captured last June would be a huge prize for Nigeria’s military.
Nigeria, Cameroun, Chad and Niger have since last month been waging an unprecedented joint offensive against the insurgents, claiming the recapture of several key towns and villages previously under Islamist control.
Ndume speculated that the Islamists were preparing to defend the symbolically important town before an expected military advance, possibly by Chadian troops who are operating in the area with Nigeria’s permission.
The motive for the rebel build-up in Gwoza could not be independently confirmed but witnesses said a large number of residents had also been killed in recent days.
The current population of Gwoza is hard to estimate.
Many people in the town on the Camerounian border fled amid the rebel takeover in June but many others — including those too old or sick to run — stayed behind.
There were also indications that Boko Haram tried to reassure people that it was safe to stay in the town and live under the so-called caliphate.
Experts said Chad’s army has offered a huge boost to Nigeria in recent
weeks as both nations have boasted of major successes against the insurgents.
Chadian President Idriss Deby on Wednesday claimed he knew where Shekau was and called on him to surrender while vowing to “wipe out” the Islamists.
In another attack, Boko Haram is believed to have killed dozens of people, including children, in Njab village in Borno State on Tuesday.
Gunmen deliberately targeted children, witnesses told AFP news agency.

“I participated in the counting of dead bodies. Sixty-eight people were killed,” said Muminu Haruna, who escaped the attack in the village.
Militants fired into homes and then set the village on fire, witnesses reported.

The massacre took place on Tuesday but reports only emerged yesterday, as the village is in an extremely remote part of the state.
Despite the resistance being put up by the insurgents, Nigerian troops yesterday successfully expelled them from Mafa in Borno.
The defence headquarters revealed this on its Twitter handle yesterday, stating: “Troops are now in full control of Mafa, Borno State after completing the operation to clear terrorists from the town yesterday evening.”

Genevieve is My Brother's Ex | JJC

Nigerian rapper and producer, Abdul Rasheed Bello better known as JJC Skillz, has explained that Nigerians abroad gave him the name ‘JJC’ shortly after he got to the United Kingdom at the age of 14. He further explained that he arrived the foreign country after he lost his father, which made his sister to adopt him.
He revealed that despite having nine A’s in his secondary school exams, he was unable to attend a university due to some reasons he could not handle, stating that he had to settle for doing odd jobs in the UK.
In his words, “When I actually got to London, people started teasing me because I could not speak in the British way very well like others. Nigerians abroad started calling me JJC (meaning Jonny Just Come) and that was how the name got stocked.
“I actually passed my exams with nine A's but I could not proceed to the university to study editing and other stuffs which I had in mind so I decided to do odd jobs before I got a job as an editor. I just wanted to do music that my people at home could relate with.”
Speaking with London’s Bang FM about his struggle to success, the singer explained that he had to deal with two different challenges, which were ‘how to make it’ and ‘familiarising himself with the foreign accent.’
“I had to switch my intonations to the street way because if I don’t learn that for the past two to three years I have been in Nigeria, so far what has been happening in my life today will not be happening because you can’t relate with population of people who are into music streetwise 80%, 20% are tush like me while the 80% speak broken (pidgin) English,” he said.
Answering a question during the interview, JJC said he cannot date Genevieve because a ‘brother’ had ‘tasted’ the actress before and would not go for what someone else has ‘used and dumped.’
“Let’s go this way, I will ignore Genevieve. She is beautiful, she is amazing but I don’t want to share my brother’s ex; it’s very controversial and for that reason, I want to be the first taker; I do love her [though],” JJC said.
Speaking on who he will kiss between Lupita Nyong’o and Joselyn Dumas, he said, “I will kiss Lupita, because she did a very good job in the movie, 12 year A Slave, I will kiss her to console her for the assault she received in that movie and I will marry Joselyn Dumas any day (singing about her physical features).”

Amaechi Tells INEC Give Us Free And Fair Elections

The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure an impartial and transparent electoral process in the forthcoming elections.
Amaechi, who made this call on Wednesday during a visit of the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Gesila Khan, to the governor at the Government House in Port Harcourt, warned that the problem of writing of election results should be nipped in the bud in order to allow Nigerians choose credible leaders in the forthcoming elections.
The governor alleged that some politicians were purchasing Permanent Voter Cards, adding that Nigerians were looking up to INEC to conduct free and fair elections despite attempts to rig the elections.
“The history of Nigeria will not be complete without INEC. The history can be positive or negative, but it depends on whether officials of INEC like you (REC) are ready to write your name in gold in the book of history.
“We don’t want rigging and writing of election results. A lot of politicians, I hear, are buying PVCs. That is why Nigerians are asking for change, because, Nigerians are looking up to INEC to ensure impartiality and transparent electoral process on March 28, 2015.
“Remember, those who try to stop change are usually consumed by change itself. All what Nigerians are asking for is a transparent process, especially if the card readers you introduce will work without manipulation.
“It means you are beginning to transform the process for better in order to allow Nigerians to choose their leaders without rigging,” the governor added.
Explaining that Nigerians were yearning for good leadership that would tackle the problems of hunger and poverty, Amaechi noted that Nigerians had been neglected by greedy and self-serving politicians.
Responding, Khan promised that she would conduct a free and fair election, even as she advised election riggers to stay away from the exercise.
The state REC, who demonstrated how the card readers would be used, explained that with the card reader, only eligible voters would be accredited and allowed to vote.
She recalled her enviable performance in Delta State and added that with the card reader, she would achieve a free and fair election in Rivers State.

Jega Cancels Meeting With RECs Over Card-Reader Testing

The Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has shifted his meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners to Wednesday, March 11.
The meeting, which was initially scheduled to take place on Wednesday (yesterday), was to enable the commissioners to give the chairman feedback on the collection of the Permanent Voter Cards and other preparations for election.
It was gathered that on March 12, INEC would finalise preparations for the March 28 and April 11 general elections.
It was learnt that the meeting was shifted to enable RECs to give Jega results of card- readers’ testing on Saturday.
There were fears at INEC on Monday that some pro-government RECs might pass a vote of no confidence on INEC chairman at meeting, initially scheduled for Wednesday.
The vote of no vote confidence, it was gathered, was planned to be a prelude to Jega’s removal by the Federal Government.
It was, however, learnt that the said pro-government commissioners might have had a change of mind because of the growing opposition to the alleged plan to remove Jega.
But investigations revealed that Jega’s supporters were not letting down their guards despite the alleged change of mind of the pro-government RECs.
It was learnt they had decided to wait till the end of the election before they could believe President Goodluck Jonathan, who had said that he would not remove Jega.
The House of Representatives and civil rights groups have warned against Jega’s removal, adding that he must not be sent on terminal leave.
But Jonathan had, in an interview with Aljazeera on Monday, said that there was no plan to sack Jega.
But it was learnt that Jega’s supporters in the commission were taking the President’s assurance with a pinch of salt.
A senior INEC official, who confided in The PUNCH, said, “It seems the few government apologists are making a U-turn on the vote of no confidence against Jega.
“They have realised that the mood in the country is not favourable to that, but those of us backing the chairman are not letting down our guard.
“With the sustained campaign against the use of PVCs and voter cards, anything can still happen. Their main grouse against Jega is the insistence on the use of card readers and PVCs. The chairman, however, has a support among commissioners on these and other issues.”
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, in an email to our correspondent, confirmed that the meeting had been shifted.
“The meeting will now hold on Wednesday, March 11, 2015,” he said.
He, however, denied a claim that the planned vote of no confidence was in the agenda of the meeting.
He further explained that it was commission’s meeting with RECs, adding that it was scheduled to finalise preparations for the general elections.
Idowu stated, “The commission’s (not Chairman’s) meeting with RECs was a long scheduled operational meeting to finalise preparations for the general elections.”
The CPS explained that the meeting was shifted so that RECs could give reports on the testing of card readers, which would hold on Saturday.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo | We Didn’t Endorse APC Candidates in Lagos

Lagos State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has said that it did not endorsed any All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate in Lagos, urging its members and the public to dismiss the rumour.
While reacting to a story published by a newspaper, the Lagos president of the organisation, Chief Fabian Onwuya, stated that Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains one in the state, saying those parading themselves, as Lagos executives are fake.
Onwuya noted that the said publication did not represent Ohanaeze’s position in the forth-coming election, saying that those involved in the pronouncement were mere ‘political merchants’, collecting money from ‘political victims’.
He explained that the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan is being strictly complied with by all the Igbos in Lagos, adding that his presidency has given the Igbo nation a sense of belonging.
He accused APC of conniving with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in denying Igbos access to their PVCs, saying that most of its members have been instructed to pay for the collection if demands are made.
The group pointed out that his support for Jonathan is based on his performance in office, which he said has been unprecedented in the history of the nation; noting that more than ever, Igbo people have been empowered and appointed into key posts in government.
He stressed that President Jonathan is committed to the construction of the second Niger Bridge, which it said, has been abandoned by previous governments, adding that Jonathan has been able to match his words with action. He added that Onitsha-Enugu road has been constructed to the delight of all easterners.
He therefore itemised the conditions on which Igbos in Lagos would support any candidate in the state, which include commissioner slots in trade, land, commerce and transport; five chairmanship positions in boards of parastatals and 20 per cent of board appointment among others.

Former Chief Justice Son Joins ISIS In The Middle East.

The Nigerian Watch has reported that the son of Former chief justice of Nigeria Muhammadu Uwais has gone to the Middle East to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) terrorist group
The son of the 79-year-old Justice Uwais, who served as the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria from 1995 till 2006, is now an active combatant with Isis.
He was said to have left Nigeria for Syria few days ago with his two wives and children to allegedly enlist and fight alongside the Isis terrorists who presently control large territories in Iraq, Syria and Libya.
Justice Uwais, who after his retirement served as chairman of the committee that reviewed Nigeria’s electoral laws in 2007, has been informed about his son’s decision although it cannot yet be ascertained if the son had been involved with Nigeria’s home-bred Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram.
The alleged move is seen as a big coup for the terrorists as it has now become a growing trend among middle class Muslims from wealthy families across the world who mostly abandons their legitimate and lucrative careers to join the jihadist in their arm struggle.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time a wealthy Nigerian son is being linked to foreign terrorist activities as it would be recalled that on December 25, 2009, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the youngest son of Katsina’s Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, a rich Nigerian banker and businessman, who had earlier served as a federal minister in the 1970s was arrested after a foiled attempt to use underwear bomb to blow up an aircraft en route from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan on the instructions of Al-Qaeda terrorist group which he is a member.
He is currently serving four life sentences and a 50 year jail term without parole in the United States for his crime.
However, suspected armed men on Tuesday March 3 stormed the official residence of Nigeria’s former Chief Justice, Mohammed Uwais and held him and his family at gun point.
Recall that the Federal Government warned on February 26, that Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) is radicalising and recruiting Nigerian youths who are studying abroad.

Amaechi Swears in New 21 LG Caretaker Chairmen

Rivers State governor and the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Rotimi Amaechi, has sworn in 21 local government council chairmen at Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital

During the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, Amaechi urged the newly sworn-in council chairmen to attach seriousness to the protection of lives and property in the various councils across the state.

Some of the council chairmen include Udi Udom of Abua/Odual, Chief Kassidy Ikegbidi for Ahoada-East, Esuku N. Esuku for Andoni, Orji Ngofa for Eleme, Nweke Felix for Oyigbo local government area, and Ojukaye Flagg-Amachree for Asari-Toru.

Others are Mina Tende for Ogu/Bolo, Kadilo Kabari for Gokana, Worlu Gift for Obio/Akpor, Felix Amadi for Ikwerre, Nnamdi Wuche for Phalga, Fenibo Jack for Akuku/Toru, Agabi Blessing for Ahoada-West and Charles Anyanwu for Etche local government area.

Also sworn in were Akaba Nemaa Aleelo for Tai, Nnamdi Abah for Emohua, Barrister Kelechi Ubani for Omuma, Mene Derek for Khana and Chief Amangi Sunday for Okirika.

This is the third time Governor Amaechi has sworn in council chairmen for another three months in office, which the opposition in the state has recently criticised.

He also called on security operatives to assist the government and the various councils to tackle the increasing crime rate in the state.

“I want you all to attach seriousness to your primary assignment. It is my hope that the police and other security operatives will help you in arresting the criminals,” the governor said.

Why Jonathan, PDP Aare Angry With Jega

There were revelations in Abuja on Monday on why President Goodluck Jonathan and the national leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party were angry with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega.
A week-long investigation by our correspondent in Abuja showed that the President and his party are not happy with Jega over his insistence that the commission would use the Permanent Voter Cards for the election.
The PVCs were used for the conduct of the governorship elections in both Ekiti and Osun states, which were won by the PDP and the All Progressives Congress respectively.
Apart from this, the President and the party were also angry that the commission was going ahead with its decision to use card readers.
This technology was however not used in both Ekiti and Osun states elections.
The commission has said that the card reader can only read PVC issued by it and that any person that shows up at the polling unit without a PVC or with a card not issued by INEC will not be able to vote.
It was learnt that the Presidency and the ruling party were not totally against the use of the PVCs, but they were not happy with the use of card readers.
A worker in the Presidency who spoke with our correspondent on Sunday queried the insistence of INEC under the leadership of Jega to go ahead with the two items.
He said, “Now, what we are saying is that yes, the PVCs were used in both Ekiti and Osun governorship elections but the way and manner the PVCs are being distributed now is suspicious.
“Look at the figure of those who have collected from the northern part of the country and look at the figure from the southern part, where President Jonathan hails from.
“If the election is going to be by ethnic sentiment alone, you will know that our President has been defeated already. So, that’s the reason.
“Look at Ogun and Lagos states, which we all know are politically sophisticated. Why are the electorates not picking their PVCs? We are worried.”
In terms of PVCs collection, figures released by the commission indicated that Ogun State is lagging behind among all the states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory.
In the state, only 808,590 out of the 1,829,534 registered voters had collected their PVCs. This figure represents a mere 44.20 per cent.
But the commission said that 1,387,401 PVCs had been delivered to the state.
Lagos State with 5,822,207 registered voters had recorded 63.44 per cent of the PVCs collection. This shows that 3,693,355 of the cards had been picked by their owners.
But the commission said that 5,558,062 cards had been delivered for voters in the state.
This means that there are 1,864,707 PVCs yet to be picked by their owners in the state.
When asked whether the refusal of the owners of the PVCs to pick them up could be attributed to Jega, the source said that the commission should embark on more enlightenment.
On the issue of card readers, a member of the National Working Committee of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that there was no way the machine would be effective in the area of accreditation of voters.
When this issue was raised before the commission, an explanatory note presented to our correspondent showed that accreditation of a voter using the card reader is expected to last for about 20 seconds.

The incumbent governor of Akwa-Ibom, Governor Godswill Akpabio has stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will win over 90% of the votes cast across the country in the forthcoming 2015 presidential election.
Speaking to the media in Abuja, Governor Akpabio said that, having taken stock of preparations for the forthcoming general elections, it has become clear that the Peoples Democratic Party would win the March 28 Presidential election on the first ballot.
He boasted that the party’s candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, would win over 90 percent of the votes cast across the country.
In his words: “The meeting was just to take stock of the situation on ground and the report is very favourable. It looks like on the first ballot, we will win well over 90 percent of the votes across Nigeria.”
The governor said in the four years of Jonathan’s administration, the President had performed better than any President in the history of the country.
He said, “Today, Nigerians are much more aware of what the PDP administration under President Goodluck Jonathan has been doing.

50 JAMB Candidates Arrested By Police

Officials of the Benue state Police Command have arrested no less than 50 candidates of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the metropolis.
Mr Hycinth Dagala, the state’s Commissioner of Police who made this known to Ynaija on Monday, said the candidates were arrested for violent protests and stoning of security officials.
Dagala, said the police intervened to prevent breakdown of law and order when the candidates started throwing stones at JAMB officials, adding that some of the stones injured one of the security guards and a police officer attached to the office.
“The candidates numbering over 300 today approached the JAMB Zonal Office in Makurdi and demanded their print-outs. The JAMB officials pleaded with them to come back after one hour for their JAMB slips, but that they refused and started throwing stones at the officials and security operatives,” he said. “They injured one police officer, a security guard and some women who were selling food around the office and also burnt tyres on the road.”
The commissioner of police said officials from the command quickly mobilized to the scene and apprehended about 50 of the protesting candidates in order to calm the situation.

BlackBerry Announces Leap Phone, Moving Back Toward Touch Screens

After returning in force to its keyboard roots last year, BlackBerry jumped back into touch-screen phones this week at the Mobile World Congress here, announcing the five-inch BlackBerry Leap.
At its news conference here, the company also teased — in the briefest of fashions — that a curved phone with a slider keyboard might be “coming later this year.”
BlackBerry dual curve slider teased. Only on show for 5 seconds. “Coming later this year…”
As for the Leap, BlackBerry said it would go the distance for business users, with a 25-hour battery life, although it is no flagship device. The Leap will retail for $275 when it goes on sale in Europe in April. There is no word on whether it will be sold in the United States.
Its specifications are appropriately middle of the road: a high but not extremely high-definition screen, an eight megapixel rear-facing camera and a two megapixel front-facing camera, acceptable processor and memory specs, and a slightly heavy weight compared with some of the competition.
John S. Chen, the BlackBerry chief executive, focused much of his presentation on BlackBerry’s shift from a pure device maker to a company that can power business services on a variety of devices.
BlackBerries now run Android apps, and Mr. Chen emphasized a relationship with Samsung and its Knox division, which has created a business-oriented environment that can hold work-related apps and keep them separate from other data on a device.
In addition to the Leap, BlackBerry said it would introduce another phone this year that features a keyboard, as well as a followup to the high-end Porsche edition BlackBerry, which it released last year.
Analysts said that even as the company moved toward becoming more of a services company, it was still valuable to release new phones.
“Devices still represent a very significant revenue stream,” said Ben Wood, a mobile and wireless industry analyst with CCS Insight. “They can’t afford to slow down on their device portfolio releases. And to have a proper portfolio of devices, you have to have a touch screen.”

Mark Zuckerberg Goes On Charm Offensive For Internet.org

In front of a packed audience here, Mark Zuckerberg turned on the charm.
The Facebook chief executive outlined on Monday why he thought Internet.org, a service backed by his company that is intended to provide people in emerging markets with free access to some online applications, would help telecommunications carriers persuade customers to spend more on streaming content to their cellphones.
The service, which is now offered in countries including Paraguay and Zambia, allows individuals to access Facebook and a limited number of other applications free. Carriers hope that this access — often the first time that people have surfed the web — will lead them to spend money on separate data packages.
‘‘Growing the Internet is expensive work,’’ Mr. Zuckerberg, dressed in jeans and a gray T-shirt, told an audience at the Mobile World Congress, an industry conference that has become an annual global event where telecom operators talk shop. ‘‘The only way to accelerate that is to help operators to grow their business.’’
Mr. Zuckerberg’s words are part of efforts to quell growing disquiet among some carriers, particularly in Western countries, who say that Facebook, Google and other Internet companies are taking unfair advantage of carriers’ mobile networks.
Industry executives say that these Internet services, which are used by billions of individuals each day, do not invest in the costly infrastructure required so that people can access applications on their smartphones. Some also say that the likes of Facebook, which now holds a strong position in Internet messaging after buying WhatsApp last year for $19 billion, do not face the same tough regulations as traditional operators.
‘‘We want a level playing field,’’ Vittorio Colao, Vodafone’s chief executive, said in Barcelona on Monday. ‘‘Facebook now has become one of the biggest Internet messaging companies in the world.’’
Mr. Zuckerberg tried to assuage these concerns, saying that Facebook helped drive extra revenue to carriers because people were willing to pay extra to access online services.
‘‘The business of operators used to be voice and messaging, but that has shifted towards data,’’ Mr. Zuckerberg said. ‘‘Apps like Facebook drive data usage, and that’s the future of the business.’’
And after Google announced earlier on Monday that it was working on partnerships with carriers to offer its own mobile services, Mr. Zuckerberg reiterated that he would be willing to work with the search giant on potential deals, primarily in emerging markets. Both Silicon Valley companies have announced projects, including blimps equipped to provide Wi-Fi access to the Internet across broad areas, that are intended to bring online services to developing countries.
‘‘We would love to do more with them,’’ Mr. Zuckerberg said when asked about potential agreements with Google.
As part of his charm offensive, Mr. Zuckerberg was joined on stage Monday by executives from several emerging market carriers that have become partners of Internet.org.
Christian De Faria, chief executive of Airtel Africa, one of Facebook’s partners, said he was initially skeptical about joining the Internet.org initiative.
‘‘One year ago, if you had asked me about Facebook, I would have said it was like beauty and the beast,’’ Mr. De Faria told the conference, adding that his carrier had seen an increase in paid data traffic since joining Internet.org. ‘‘But I can say that the beast has become more human.’’

NANS Warns National Leader | Stop Collecting Jonathan's Money With Our Name

The Lagos Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has asked its national body to stop soiling the Association’s name by endorsing President Goodluck Jonathan so as to get some naira rain in return.
According to Sanusi Sulaimon, Chairman of the Lagos state NANS, the Association is a non-partisan gathering of students, who are not allowed to use the umbrella name to support any political party.
In a recent chat with Naij.com, the Students’ leader said that it was not part of the President’s meeting with some students at the Eko Hotels on Sunday night.
He stated further that, “our attention has been drawn to a purported endorsement of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for second term by the apex body of the association in Abuja on Wednesday. 25 February 2015.
We wish to emphatically state that NANS/JCC Lagos dissociates itself from such baseless, needless, clueless, biased and undignified endorsement of Dr. Goodluck Johnathan the flagbearer of a political party which has ruled Nigeria for 16 years where things grown from bad to worse.

Prince Akenzuwa | Oba of Benin Does Not Endorse Political Candidates,

The Benin royal family in Edo State on Monday declared that the Oba of Benin does not endorse political candidates, describing as abominable the seeming cold war among the chiefs of the Royal Court (top palace chiefs), after the comments made by the Esogban of Benin Kingdom and Chairman of the Benin Forum, Chief David Edebiri, that the Benin people will not vote for President Goodluck Jonathan.
The family specifically described as disrespectful the alleged open castigation of the Esogban by the Eson of Benin Kingdom, Chief Amos Osunbor, who declared that the Binis will vote for President Jonathan, saying the Eson’s action was against the rules of the palace since his rank comes after that of the Esogban in the hierarchy of the palace chiefs.
Speaking through the Enogie of Obazuwa and younger brother of the Oba of Benin, Prince Edun Akenzua, the royal family also punctured the claim by Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, the Isekhure of Benin Kingdom, who had stated that the Oba had endorsed President Jonathan through the Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom last year in Abuja.
Pointing out that Isekhure gave the impression that he was the Oba’s spokesman, Prince Akennzua added: “It must be said that the Oba does not, I repeat, does not endorse any politician.
“They all visit him to seek his support and blessings. The Oba mandates the senior chief at the court during the visit to say a prayer. That prayer is stereotyped that God may give to Benin and Nigeria the person who will develop our land and make it possible for citizens to put three square meals on their tables.”
Against this backdrop, he hinted that Chief Osunbor might be court marshalled according to palace rules over his comment, explaining that: “The disturbing aspect of the whole saga is the indiscipline and disloyalty to the Benin course and our revered institution.”
In order to comprehend the gravity and implication of Eson’s act, the Enogie of Obozuwa explained briefly the organogram of the Benin chieftaincy.
According to him, “Palace or Royal Chiefs belong mainly to three groups, namely: Eghaevbo n’ore, Eghaevbo n’Ogbe and Ibiwe. Iyase is the head of Eghaevbo n’orhe. Esogban, Eson and Osuma belong to the same group and are in that order of seniority. That means Eson is next to Esogban in the hierarchy of that group.
“Both Esogban, Eson and Isekhure can exercise their freedom of speech, but that freedom of speech does not extend to a chief or member of the royal court to publicly and derisively criticise his colleague, more so, a senior one. In the military or any other force, the erring person would be court marshalled,” he declared.
Besides, the royal family also carpeted members of the President Jonathan’s campaign organisation in the state led by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu for alleged attempt to desecrate the Holy Aruosa Cathedral where the Oba worships, accusing them of taking their campaigns to the church.
“It is even more so when the leader or the coordinator is a Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God,” the crown prince said.
