A missionary associated with the Free Methodist Church in Seattle has been abducted in Nigeria.
Church officials said Rev. Phyllis Sortor was abducted Monday morning from the Hope Academy compound in Emiworo, Kogi State.
The church officials said the US Embassy, the State Department and the
FBI are working with local authorities to find and rescue Sortor.
Sortor is an alumna of Seattle Pacific University.
Her stepson, Richard Sortor, attended a prayer service at SPU on Monday
night, and told reporters: “She believes in God, she's doing God's
work.” He said the news is "surreal, just surreal, I can't believe
this."
According to AFP, the Kogi State Police Command also confirmed her
abduction. “She was whisked away at around 10 am Monday," said Kogi
State police spokesman, Sola Collins Adebayo.
The kidnappers were "unknown gunmen...(who) came into the school
premises shooting sporadically to scare away people before taking (the
hostage) away into the bush", he added.
